Announcements
Today is the last day for Science retakes. Be sure to go to S4 at 3:00 if you need to retake a test.
This week's Wacky Wednesday will be "Wear Red" in observation of Red Ribbon Week.
Today's Focus:Red Ribbon Week
This week is Red Ribbon Week. We will be using our time together in Advisory to complete related activities and discussions. Let's begin with some background on how this special week began... Red Ribbon Week: Background, Facts, and Choices (<5 minutes) Small Group/Class Discussion (Remaining Time) Teachers: Allow students to focus on one prompt at a time in small group discussion for about 3-4 minutes. Then have groups share out as a class before moving on to the next question.
Recall that 4 out of 5 minors (students under the age of 18) arrested or in juvenile hall are under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Why do you think drugs and alcohol are so closely related to criminal activity? What do you think our government can do about stopping the use of illegal drugs?
Youth that drink alcohol before the age of 15 are 5 times more likely to have a problem with alcohol addiction than those that start at 21. What do you already know about the developing brain that could help explain why this happens?
Research is showing more and more that the decisions you make about drug and alcohol use in middle school can impact your life in the long run. Do you feel you have enough information to make an educated decision on whether or not you will use drugs and alcohol? If not, what would you like to know more about?
What do you think we can do as a school to prevent drug use by students? Are these things we are already doing? What could we do better?
Kiki Camarena said: "I'm only one person, but I want to make a difference." Do you want to make a positive difference for yourself and others? What are you willing to do?

Video Discussion
1. What information from the video surprised you most?
2. This survey showed that less teenagers today are smoking, drinking, and using marijuana than in years past. Another survey, the California Healthy Kids Survey also revealed similar information:
89% of high school students in CA feel that cigarette use is not a significant problem at their schools
65% of high school students in CA feel that drug and alcohol use is not a significant problem at their schools
Why do you think more teens today are choosing not to do drugs and alcohol than in years past?

Today's Focus: E-Cigarettes
As we learned earlier this week, the Monitoring the Future survey revealed that student use of cigarettes has greatly decreased over the years, but now there is a rise in e-cigarette use.
Learn more about what we currently know about e-cigarettes: E-Cigarette Risks (<4 minutes)
So it sounds like while e-cigarettes MAY be safer than cigarettes, there are still harmful compounds, metals, and of course, nicotine in them. This has been cause for our public health agencies to take a closer look at the use of e-cigarettes. E-Cigarette Debate (<15 minutes)
Talia stated, “What you put into your body should be your choice.” Why do you think people choose to put unsafe items into their body? How important is it to you to know how safe an item is before you put it in your body? Does it sound like e-cigarettes are safe?
One of the supporters of e-cigarette use stated: "Our goal is to help people stop smoking." We do not have research yet to prove that e-cigarettes work as cessation devices and the addictive substance, nicotine, is still present in them. Do you think time will show that e-cigarettes help people stop smoking or create a new culture of smoking? Explain.
Future Focused Friday
Announcements All students with a ZAP PASS should come to the Library at the end of 7th period. If your ZAP pass is signed, turn it in so you can be released. If your ZAP pass is not signed, prepare to work on any missing assignments.
Any student with an ELAC flyer should return the bottom half to your Advisory teacher. If you did, you get to go to lunch 5 minutes early!
Today's Focus: Making the Best Choices
So now we know that while most teens do not use drug and alcohol, some still choose to do them.
Why do you think some teens do drugs and alcohol? Take the next 2 minutes to brainstorm some ideas then watch the video below.
Let's review:
One student shared that she did drugs to fit in with her friends, but then she eventually found herself alone in jail.
Another student shared that he did drugs to help "numb the pain" after losing his mom but then he left his family to live alone on the streets.
1. People may try drugs to get one thing, but end up with another. What are some other negative side effects that could happen from using drugs?
2. What are some healthy alternatives the first student could have done to feel like she belonged?
3. What could the second student have done instead of drugs to address his grief?
Music and surfing are their natural highs. What is yours?
What do you think of "inverse peer pressure?"
Reflection: "Who you surround yourself with is so important." Do the people you hang out with encourage you to make the best decisions? How do you influence your friends?
